Cruise M67/1 20.02.2006 - 13.03.2006 (22 days)

Talcahuano (Chile) – Balboa (Panama) (chief scientist: Dr. W. Weinrebe)
At the convergent margin of Chile the oceanic plate subducts beneath the continental plate. A complicated interaction exists between the morphology of the subducting oceanic plate and the tectonic processes related to subduction. The seafloor morphology is, on one hand, a result of internal tectonic processes. On the other hand, the morphology of e.g. the subducting oceanic plate influences the tectonics of the overriding continental plate. The focus of leg M 67/1 is, therefore, to conduct mapping of the seafloor. During the time in the shipyard new multibeam sonar systems for deep and shallow water depth have been installed. Furthermore, the PARASOUND sediment echosounder has been upgraded. With these systems METEOR is equipped with state-of-the-art echosounders allowing to map large areas at very high resolution. The cruise will be used to check and optimize the setup and performance of the tools.
