Melt inclusions are analysed by

  • EMA at IFM-GEOMAR for major elements, S, and Cl

  • Volatile elements (H2O, CO2, halogens, S) and trace elements by SIMS instruments at GfZ Potsdam and at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Yaroslavl

  • high-resolution laser-ablation ICP-MS at the Institute for Geosciences University of Kiel for trace elements in volcanic glasses (both matrix glasses and melt inclusions)


For whole-rocks, we use 

  • XRF for major and trace elements

  • Solution ICP-MS trace element and REE analyses are performed at the University of Kiel, Institute for Geosciences, and the University of Bremen, Geosciences Department

  • Isotopic compositions (Sr, Nd, Pb, Hf) are obtained by thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS) at IFM-GEOMAR.



Geochronology of eruptive activity is established by 14C-dating of organic material contained in tephra deposits, performed at Leibniz Laboratory for Radiometric Dating and Stable Isotope Research; and by single-crystal 40Ar/39Ar-dating in IFM-GEOMAR's geochronology lab.
