Volatiles and Fluids in Subduction Zones

Major objectives

The transfer of climate-relevant volatiles from the slab, through the mantle wedge, to the Earth's surface and the composition and dynamics of subduction-related magmatic systems in response to large-scale tectonic parameters are the research focus of subproject C2.

The following research goals are defined:

1. the volatile abundances and fluxes from the subducting slab through the mantle wedge to the surface
2. the effect of volatiles on arc magma genesis
3. the spatial and temporal variations of the volcanic output as a function of different source materials transported into the subduction zone
4. the transfer of fluids and melts from the subduction input into the mantle wedge.
